UK Posts 3.2 Percent Drop in Annual Inflation

(MENAFN) Britain's inflation rate decelerated to 3.2% in November, sliding from October's 3.6% and undershooting analyst predictions of 3.5%, government statistics revealed Wednesday.

The figure marks the weakest inflationary pressure in eight months, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

"Food and non-alcoholic beverages, and alcohol and tobacco made the largest downward contributions to the monthly change in both CPIH and CPI annual rates," ONS said in a statement.

Grocery prices delivered the most substantial relief, with food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation easing to 4.2% in November from 4.9% the previous month. Bread and cereal categories showed particularly notable declines, as prices for cakes, biscuits, and breakfast cereals fell compared to the prior year.

Multiple sectors registered cooling price pressures compared to their December 2022 peaks. Transportation costs moderated to 3.7% from 3.8%, while housing and utilities inflation slipped from 5.2% to 5.1%. Alcohol and tobacco prices showed dramatic deceleration—dropping from 5.9% to 4%—and actual housing rents eased from 4.1% to 3.8%.

The clothing and footwear sector shifted into deflation territory at -0.6% versus October's 0.3% increase, driven primarily by declining women's apparel prices.

Recreation and culture expenditures maintained steady growth at 2.9%, unchanged from the previous month.

Month-over-month consumer inflation contracted 0.2% in November, reversing October's 0.4% uptick and signaling diminishing price momentum across the economy.
